Petition to Implement Commuter Rail Service in Alberta for Enhanced Accessibility

To the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in Legislature Assembled:

We the undersigned residents of Alberta, petition the Legislative Assembly to urge the government of Alberta to:

1. Introduce legislation to create a provincial entity that would have the rights of a "public passenger service provider" as defined in the Canada Transportation Act, with the mandate to develop and operate commuter rail in Alberta.

2. Consider allocating funding to develop and operate a frequent and reliable commuter rail service serving Okotoks, Calgary, Airdrie, Red Deer, Maskwacis, Leduc and Points between with fares that would be affordable for the majority of Albertans.

3. Introduce legislation to protect the rights of rail passengers and allow the government to define performance standards for the timely operation of such a commuter rail service.

WHY THIS PETITION MATTERS

My mother, like many others in Alberta, is unable to drive to Calgary for her medical appointments. University students, burdened with student loans and the cost of living, struggle to afford personal transportation. These are not isolated incidents but reflect a larger issue - the lack of accessible public transportation between major cities in our province.

We petition the Legislative Assembly to urge the government of Alberta to introduce legislation creating a provincial entity with rights as a "public passenger service provider" under the Canada Transportation Act. This entity would be responsible for developing and operating commuter rail services within Alberta.

We also request that funding be allocated towards establishing frequent commuter rail services between Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton. According to Statistics Canada 2016 Census data, these three cities house over 50% of Alberta's population (source: Statistics Canada). The implementation of such a service would significantly improve accessibility for residents traveling between these cities.

By signing this petition, you are supporting improved public transportation options that will enhance quality of life for all Albertans - from those who cannot drive due to health reasons or financial constraints, to those who choose not to own an automobile due their commitment towards environmental sustainability. Please sign this petition today and help us bring change!
